Pink eye or conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the thin membrane called the conjunctiva covering the white part of the eye. There are different types of pink eye, and while some are quite contagious, others are not. It can be caused by a virus, bacteria, or even allergies. It can affect both children and adults. However, children are more prone to it than adults, as germs spread easily from unwashed hands and infected surfaces.  Dr Ajoy Mohan, medical director, Malabar Maxivision Eye Hospital, Eranjipalam, explains causes, symptoms and prevention tips for conjunctivitis.

What causes conjunctivitis?
Infection (bacteria/virus): It could easily spread from one person to another. 
Allergy: Conjunctivitis caused by an allergy does not spread.

Symptoms of conjunctivitis
a) The whites of the eye may appear red due to inflammation
b) Yellow/green discharges 
c) Watery eyes 
d) Itching and discomfort too
e) Difficulty in looking at lights

Prevention tips
Conjunctivitis may easily spread from one person to another. So, following hygiene tips is crucial. The virus could spread when you work outside, through dust particles. Besides, conjunctivitis can be spread through public ponds and pools. Therefore, use proper protective equipment, such as goggles.
