Many children today grow up watching their parents apply lipstick and other cosmetics and are urged to imitate them. Even on social media, there are many child beauty influencers whose cute 'Get Ready With Me' videos are extremely popular. While their actions are definitely endearing, it's important to understand that makeup products, such as lipsticks, are not safe for children to use. Dr Melna Jose, Consultant Dermatologist, Vibha Clinic of Bharath Hospital in Kottayam, explains.

Sensitive skin
Children's skin is much more sensitive than adults'. The layers of cells in their skin are thin, allowing them to absorb chemicals quickly. The chemicals present in lipstick can easily enter a child's body and potentially cause serious health problems, including allergies.

Hidden pitfalls
Low-quality lipsticks on the market today pose a serious danger. Such products are often not manufactured adhering to proper standards or regulations. Therefore, they are likely to contain banned and harmful chemicals in large quantities. This is more than what children's skin can tolerate.

The villains in lipstick
1. Lead:
Many brands of lipsticks contain small amounts of lead. Children may accidentally ingest lipstick when they apply it. This can adversely affect children's brain development and nervous system.
2. Cadmium, chromium: These heavy metals are extremely harmful to the body. Studies have shown that chromium, in particular, significantly increases the risk of developing cancer in the future.
3. Artificial colours and fragrance: The chemicals added to give lipstick colour and scent can cause severe itching, burning, and chapped lips (Contact Dermatitis) in children's lips.

Major adverse effects
Darkening of lips: Constant use of chemicals in lipstick can cause children to lose their natural rosy colour and their lips to darken.
Allergies: Small bumps on the face and lips, and swelling are common.
Gastrointestinal Problems: Lipstick applied to the lips can reach the stomach and cause digestive problems and infections.

What parents should note
● Age and restriction:
It is best to keep children completely away from makeup products until at least 12-13 years of age. However, even after 12-13 years, daily and frequent use of lipsticks should be completely avoided.
Safe alternatives: If absolutely necessary for photoshoots or similar occasions, use organic lip balm or ghee instead of lipstick.
Remove immediately: If lipstick is used, it should be gently wiped off with coconut oil immediately after the event. Never scrub with harsh soap. Children's natural beauty is the best. Parents need to be aware of the risk of endangering that beauty with chemicals.
