Bigg Boss 12 winner actress Dipika Kakar, who was diagnosed with liver cancer last year, has been sharing updates on her health via her social media page. Recently, she shared that every 20 days, she undergoes infusion therapy for her ongoing cancer treatment, and it has been a routine.
It's a way to deliver cancer drugs, fluids, and blood products into a patient's bloodstream. Catheters or needles are used for the same purpose for precision. Not all cancer patients require infusion therapy, according to the Cleveland Clinic. It depends on the stage of the cancer, its type, the patient's overall health and genetic markers.
When is infusion therapy necessary?
Infusion therapy is chosen when a patient's cancer has spread to a metastatic or advanced stage, according to the Cleveland Clinic. They require systemic medications to ensure the drugs reach cancer cells throughout the body.
The therapy is also advised when a patient must take antibodies that would be destroyed if ingested. If a patient's tumours are growing fast, infusion is advised to shrink them fast.
Liver cancer
In May last year, Dipika had revealed that there was a tennis ball-sized tumour in her liver and it was second-stage malignant.
There are two types of liver cancers, and their common symptoms are:
a) General weakness
b) Fluid buildup
c) Swelling on the body
d) Sudden weight loss
e) Loss of appetite
f) Yellow eyes and skin
g) Abdomen ache
