How to make your drinking water safe after the monsoon? Doctor's tips

The recent floods had submerged the wells, the only drinking water source, in many homes. Although the floodwaters have started receding, the chances of the well water becoming contaminated are high. You should be extremely careful while using such water again for drinking and other purposes. Super chlorination using bleaching powder solution should be done before using the water again. The purified water should be boiled for at least 10 minutes before cooling and drinking. Dr TK Munavar Rahman, Health Officer of Kozhikode Corporation, explains. 

Boiling will eliminate bacteria and viruses in water from contaminated wells. Do not use the water if you notice changes in colour or smell. 
• Those who had waded through the flood waters should take the doxycycline tablets to prevent rat fever as per the instructions of the health workers. 
• Utensils in submerged kitchens should be washed well before using them again for cooking. Use clean water to wash utensils, as contaminated water can cause waterborne diseases. Avoid water logging in the yards or nearby areas. Do not get into such water or swim in it. 

How to do super chlorination
Do super chlorination according to the water level in the well. Use five grams of bleaching powder for 1000 litres of water. Take a sufficient quantity of bleaching powder in a bucket; add water as required. Keep it aside for at least 10 minutes for the water to clear up. The lime in the bleaching solution will settle at the bottom, while the chlorine mixes into the water. Lower the bucket with the clear bleaching solution into the well to mix it with the water. The water in the well is safe for use an hour after chlorination.
