For generations, humanity has developed machinery to limit physical labour. Today, we have reached a point where we barely need to flick a switch; simple voice commands can operate complex systems from the comfort of our seats. Having successfully minimised physical effort, our next collective goal was to outsource mental labour. We quickly found our solution in a simple two-letter abbreviation: AI, the globally celebrated, all-knowing oracle. Now, if we find ourselves reluctant to make a decision, a chatbot is ready with an instant answer. Unfortunately, this convenience is beginning to cast a long shadow over human creativity—a trait we once believed was exclusively ours. Dr Joseph Sunny Kunnassery of Prayathna Child Development Centre, Kochi, explains. 

Over time, what started as a helpful hand to correct typos in emails or polish presentations has evolved into an invisible chain. Many of us now find ourselves unable to trust a single sentence we write without a chatbot's validation. We have slowly mortgaged our own thoughts, analysis, and creative instincts to a digital machine, often without even realising it.

In the modern corporate world, refusing to utilise artificial intelligence is often framed as a failure to keep up with the times. When automated tools provide rapid solutions, thinking is increasingly viewed as a waste of time. Yet, as we hand over our cognitive tasks one by one, we must recognise the growing mental void left behind. The ultimate psychological crisis of the modern workforce lies in this: we built machines to free up our time so we could think deeper and rest more, but we are now losing our minds trying to match the relentless pace of machines that never sleep.

Defining AI brain fry and technostress
AI brain fry, scientifically referred to as cognitive saturation, is the intense mental exhaustion experienced when our brains are overloaded by digital demands. Alongside this, technostress represents the chronic anxiety and mental strain that stems from having to constantly adapt to new digital workflows, constant system updates, and evolving AI platforms.

The erosion of self-efficacy
When we delegate our natural analytical capabilities to automated software—a process psychologists call cognitive offloading—our brains begin to stagnate. In the past, resolving a complex problem required critical thinking, learning from mistakes, and working through uncertainty. Though digital tools claim to simplify our workflows, they often do the opposite by doubling our cognitive load. For instance, when given a prompt, an AI can effortlessly generate several drafts in seconds. However, the responsibility of evaluating, refining, and choosing the best draft still falls squarely on the human user. Making these continuous micro-decisions throughout the day leads to decision fatigue, leaving workers struggling to make simple choices and feeling deeply anxious about their capabilities.

Psychological safety and corporate burnout
Burnout is skyrocketing in the corporate sector, driven largely by the unspoken fear of job displacement. Employees cannot maintain sound mental health without psychological safety—the freedom to speak openly and make mistakes without the constant dread of being replaced by automated systems. Organisations must look beyond superficial wellness programmes and apps and take active steps to monitor and address the invisible pressures of digital environments on their staff.

How to practice healthy AI hygiene
To combat these digital pressures, practising healthy AI hygiene is essential. Make it a rule to draft your initial ideas or project outlines independently before opening any technological tools. Additionally, we must learn to embrace moments of boredom; our brains need quiet, unscheduled time to synthesise original thoughts and concepts. Finally, ensure a strict digital detox by disconnecting from work screens and tools once office hours are over.

Ultimately, doubts and mistakes are natural elements of being human. True wisdom, empathy, and intuitive understanding cannot be simulated by software. To protect our mental wellbeing from being consumed by modern technology, we must learn to slow down, let our minds rest, and choose to live more humanely.
