Thiruvalla: Geevarghese Mar Timotheos, the former bishop of the Thiruvalla diocese of the Syro Malabar Catholic Church, passed away here on Tuesday morning.

He was 91 years old.

His funeral will be held at the St John's Metropolitan Cathedral at Thiruvalla on Thursday.

The ex-bishop was admitted to the Pushpagiri Medical College Hospital a few days ago owing to age-related issues. He passed away at the hospital.

Public may pay respects to the departed cleric at the hospital till noon today. Later homage could be paid at the St John's Cathedral.

Timotheos was the priest of various churches under the Thiruvalla diocese. In 1987 he became the diocese administrator and on August 8, 1988 he was elevated as the bishop of this archeparchy in Central Travancore.

He played a critical role in upgrading the Pushpagiri Hospital in Thiruvalla as a medical college.

Several hospitals and old-age homes were launched with his initiative in the adjoining districts.

He retired as the bishop in 2003 at the age of 75.

Post retirement he was active in a few social organisations and contributed to promoting unity in the Church.
