No more plastic covers, Kaduthurthy meat sellers go for the good, old leaves

Kaduthuruthy: With the ban on single-use plastic coming into effect, the meat sellers of the Kaduthuruthy market in Kottayam district have returned to a traditional practice. Now, the meat is packed in leaves of teak and other plants.

One of the merchants, Biju Mannkanad, had been selling meat in plastic covers till January 1. However, he has shifted to more eco-friendly options such as plant leaves.

Earlier, up to 2.5kg of plastic was used for selling meat. Now, these are neatly wrapped in leaves and then tied with banana fibres.

Only difference is that it would take more time to pack in the traditional method. However, the consumers are not complaining. The merchants are also reminding people to bring cloth bags or baskets for shopping.
