More than a comrade: Former personal staff member A Suresh pays tribute to V S Achuthanandan

Thiruvananthapuram: The demise of VS Achuthanandan has crushed A Suresh, a long-time member of the veteran Marxist leader's staff. He feels as if he has lost his father.
"I haven't fed food or medicines to my father. I did it all for VS," he said.
Suresh was not just a staff member to VS, he was much more. His wife was in labour when the CPI(M) Central Committee met in Hyderabad— a time when intraparty tensions were at their peak. Yet, Suresh knew he had to be by VS's side.
After admitting his wife to a hospital, Suresh took her permission and left for Hyderabad. "I knew VS would face several difficulties if I were not with him. I shared a room with VS then in Hyderabad," Suresh said.
Tough politician and a doting grandfather
The CPM was facing intense internal conflict over the Lavalin case, and the rift soon became public. Both Pinarayi Vijayan and VS Achuthanandan were suspended from the Polit Bureau. It was the first time that Suresh saw VS sad and disappointed. The ouster from the top body of the party, which he, too, was instrumental in forming, and the delay in revoking the suspension disturbed him.
Sometimes, VS was angry while leaving the AKG Centre. On such days, he would remain silent and ignore people he did not like. If one such person approaches him, VS will immerse himself in a newspaper.
When criticised in party committee's he will feign sleep, but will listen to each word. His face brightens up in the presence of his grandchildren. And VS will cease to be a politician and turns into a doting grandfather.
Footwear lover
VS was interested in buying shoes and other footwear. Even though he already owned several pairs, he wouldn't hesitate to visit a new showroom if someone mentioned it to him. He was particular about choosing the footwear himself. Once selected, he would pull out a plastic cover secured with a rubber band from his pocket, and pay the amount.
He was like KM Mani in changing his jubba several times a day. Once back from an event, he wears a fresh one.
Ousting staff members
VS was furious when the CPI(M) decided to oust three personal staff members, including Suresh, for allegedly leaking party information.
He hoped the PB would correct the party. However, it upheld the party decision, which deeply disappointed and angered VS. The leader asked the trio to be with him, though they were not part of the staff. For them, parting with VS was never an option— until now, when it has finally come to pass.
