Thrissur: The ceiling of the auditorium at Kodaly Government LP School in Thrissur collapsed early on Wednesday. The structure, made of gypsum board, gave way completely. However, a major disaster was averted as no one was present in the hall at the time.

Local residents reported hearing a loud noise from the auditorium. Ceiling fans also came crashing down. The incident could have been catastrophic had it occurred during school hours, as students frequently gather in the auditorium for various activities.

In addition to school programmes, the auditorium also hosts panchayat-related camps and public functions. Built using ₹52 lakh allotted from the Puthukkad constituency asset development fund, the building was inaugurated in 2023. The construction was carried out by Costford (Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development).

Previously, the auditorium's GI sheet roof had shown signs of leakage. Costford representatives had visited the site and reportedly addressed the issue. However, authorities now suspect that a renewed leak might have weakened the ceiling and caused the collapse.
