Kochi: The police on Monday took a man into custody after the body of a newborn girl was found at a waste dumping site in Kanjirakkad near Perumbavoor.
The suspect, identified as Majirul Sheik from Murshidabad in West Bengal, has been living in the area for several years. His wife Sheela, who reportedly delivered the baby earlier in the day, has been admitted to hospital and will be taken into custody after discharge, police said.
The incident came to light around 4 pm when local residents noticed stray dogs near the dumping yard and found the infant’s body. Police were alerted immediately and the site was sealed for investigation.
A preliminary probe suggests the couple abandoned the child soon after birth. Investigators are verifying whether the infant was born alive or stillborn.
Majirul, a daily-wage worker, is being questioned at Perumbavoor police station under ASP Hardik Meena’s supervision. The inquest has been completed and the body sent for post-mortem to confirm the cause of death.
Police said a case will be registered against the parents.
