Sreekrishnapuram: Accidents have become rampant in Thiruvazhiyode Junction, which is an important spot in the Mundoor – Thootha state highway, after traffic regulations were revised unscientifically. A scooter that came from Cherpulassery side was hit by a car from behind, the other day.

The car was heading to Mannarkad, while the scooter was going to Palakkad side. Thiruvazhiyiode is a crucial junction where vehicles coming from various directions turn to Cherpulassery, Mannarkad, Palakkad and Ottapalam sides.

Lots of vehicles, including two-wheelers, private automobiles, buses and huge lorries pass through here daily. Meanwhile, drivers and local residents complain that the traffic circles built at the junction as part of the Mundoor-Thootha state highway development have been causing confusion among drivers.

If a driver going from Cherpulassery to Mannarkad slows down the vehicle as he/she gets confused about how to turn at the traffic circle, it will surely collide with the vehicle coming from behind. This confusion among the drivers has been causing accidents in this area.

Besides, there is a risk of accidents as there is no space between the traffic circles for the buses from Palakkad – Ottapalam sides to turn to Mannarkad side. There had also been incidents of vehicles speeding onto the traffic circle in the centre.

People have been urging installation of dividers and also the deployment of traffic personnel to give instructions for the vehicles from the area in front of the old police station building on Cherpulassery Road. Besides, the absence of zebra crossings is creating problems for pedestrians who struggle to cross the busy roads.

People often have close shaves with speeding vehicles when they swiftly cross the road to board the bus. Currently, there are three traffic circles at Thiruvazhiyode Junction, which apparently cause confusion among drivers. The authorities, meanwhile, have been urged to place warning signs at the junction to avoid accidents and mishaps.
