As the northeast monsoon is expected to set in over Kerala soon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning across several parts of the state till October 15. In a revised forecast, the IMD on Saturday has issued an orange alert for Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod, and a yellow alert for Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. Rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is expected in these districts within 24 hours.

“Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places over Kerala and Lakshadweep from October 10 to 15, 2025. Heavy rainfall (7 cm to 11 cm in 24 hours) is very likely at one or two places in Kerala during this period,” the IMD alert said.

This year, the southwest monsoon reached Kerala on May 24, earlier than the normal date of June 1. According to the IMD, this marked the earliest onset of the monsoon over the Indian mainland since 2009.
