Irinjalakkuda: Kanchana has been earning her living by fishing in the Chemmanda lake for the past five decades. Her name was even included in the list of recipients when Karalam panchayat launched the project to provide boats and nets for the inland fisherfolk. But she is no longer a fisherwoman in the eyes of the panchayat authorities now.

They dropped Kanchana’s name later from the list. The 67-year-old woman alleges that the panchayat has been nursing a prejudiced attitude towards her.

Boats and nets were distributed to as many as 10 fishermen in the area on October 12. Meanwhile, Kanchana, who regularly contributes to the inland fisherfolk benefit fund, is appalled at the panchayat’s finding that she is not an approved fisherwoman.
