Perambra: MP Shafi Parambil on Thursday alleged that the violence related to the college union election at CKGM Government College, Perambra, on October 9 was pre-planned by the police. Showing photographs of injured persons, he said the police targeted him and his supporters despite their efforts to maintain peace.

“A police officer told a media person that no violence took place in Perambra, which immediately led to the spread of fake news. Additionally, the Rural SP said he did not order a lathi charge, but that several police officers intentionally created the ruckus. Then he mentioned using an AI tool to find the accused. Why isn’t the probe moving forward? What AI tool will be used, and where is the accused? This is clear political interference by the CPM,” he said in a press conference.

He also alleged that police repeatedly targeted him: “I was hit three times by the same officer, once on my head, then on my nose. When I moved away, he changed direction to aim at me. Look at the visuals, was there even a stone thrown towards the police?”

Addressing allegations regarding grenades, Shafi said, “DYSP Hariprasad was carrying tear gas and grenades in his hands. Amid the crowd, he held a lathi in one hand and a grenade in the other, trying to hit people. Yet we are called the ‘grenade party’. According to the FIR, a grenade fell out of his hand amid the tension, and he was injured. If that is the case, why was he carrying it and trying to hit people at the same time? Following this incident, the Kozhikode Police also issued a notice on grenade training, which says all there is to be said.”

When asked why he did not go to the hospital after being assaulted, he said, “I did not know my nose was broken, but leaving could have aggravated the situation. We stayed to ensure the tension did not escalate further.”

In the college election, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), affiliated with the CPM, won 15 seats, while the KSU–MSF alliance secured five. However, the bloc managed to win the chairperson’s post, triggering clashes between rival groups that later spread to Perambra town. Tensions further escalated when supporters of both fronts came face-to-face near the Perambra bus stand during separate rallies on October 10. When police intervened, violence broke out, leaving several people, including police officers and the MP.
