Malayala Manorama Special Correspondent G Vinod dies at 54

Thiruvananthapuram: G Vinod, special correspondent with the Thiruvananthapuram Bureau of Malayala Manorama and a well-known investigative journalist, passed away on Saturday. He was 54.
After a public homage at Nivedyam House in Sree Chitra Quarters, Kumarapuram, his mortal remains will be taken to the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club at 3 pm, followed by the Malayala Manorama office. The cremation will take place at Shanthikavadam, Thycaud, at 4 pm.
Vinod came to prominence through a series of investigative reports that exposed major scams and irregularities. His investigations into the Suzuki engine import scam at Matsyafed and the Kerala State Development Corporation for Christian Converts led to the dissolution of the administrative councils of both bodies. His reports from Malaysia, which highlighted irregularities linked to the suicide of a contractor involved in the construction of a State highway, also drew widespread attention.
A recipient of several prestigious honours, Vinod was awarded the Malayala Manorama Chief Editor’s Gold Medal, the State government’s Journalism Award, the Mumbai Press Club Award, and the Kerala Media Academy Award.
Vinod was the son of the late K. Gopinatha Panicker of Sharada Nivas, Murinjapalam (former Statistics Officer, Kerala University), and Remadevi (former Kerala University employee). He is survived by his wife, Sindhu Suryakumar, Executive Editor of Asianet, and their son, Ishan S Vinod, a Class V student at L’école Chempaka School in Sreekariyam.
