Thiruvananthapuram: The first women-friendly high-tech bus shelter in Kerala has come up at Kazhakkoottam junction in the capital city. Women reaching the bus stop can not only use the wash room, dispose sanitary napkins but also feed their infants.
Authorities said that more such facilities will be built in other parts of the city. The modern bus shelter has CCTV camera, Wi-Fi, FM radio and washroom. For men, a separate bus shelter will be set up 20 m away with a roof and seats only. One wash room in the high-tech bus shelter could be used by men.
An old bus shelter at Kazhakkoottam was demolished to build the new one at the same place.
According to Mayor V K Prasanth, bus shelters in the city are being made high-tech considering the suggestions in social media. There have been complaints that there were no public wash rooms in the city, where tens of thousands of people, including from other states, visit every day.
The new bus shelter has received much appreciation from social media.
Meanwhile, demands have been raised to set up a similar modern bus shelter on the Technopark campus or adjacent to it.
