Paravur: Chendamangalam handloom, which was ravaged by the recent floods in Kerala, is all set to create ripples on the ramp of the famed Lakme Fashion Week early next year. IMG Reliance curator Goutham Vasirani said that a special slot would be allotted to showcase the designer clothes produced at the handlooms of Chendamangalam, at the Lakme Fashion Week which would be conducted in January 2019.

Leading fashion designers in the country would visit Chendamangalam in the coming days to assess the possibilities of creating designer couture from the traditional handloom. The Lakme Fashion Week is one of the most celebrated fashion events in India which draws global attention as well.

“We are trying to provide new and improved prospects for the traditional handloom industries of Kerala. The project envisions ways to ensure permanent income for the weavers and thereby bring the Chendamangalam handloom to the forefront, to grab international attention,” said Goutham Vasirani.

Goutham and his colleagues who reached Paravur spoke to the weavers. More designers would reach here as soon as weaving restarts at the restored looms. The officials have not set a time limit for this, and they assured that if the maintenance works are not completed by January next year, the handloom clothes produced at Chendamangalam would be exhibited at the fashion week coming after next.

The weavers demanded that the government should provide Rs 250 as an assured wage for at least 4 months, as it would take some time to restore the damaged looms. They added that the authorities should intervene as the weavers find it difficult to avail the ESI facilities due to being unemployed.

The online community called ‘Save the Loom’ headed by Ramesh Menon, who is a fashion consultant in Delhi and celebrity fashion designer Poornima Indrajith has taken the initiative to bring renowned designers to Chendamangalam. Gocoop representative Suresh, and fashion designers Shalini James, Sreejith Jeevan, Padmaja, Sunitha Krishnan, Joe, Alan and Jebin Johny too were included in the group which visited Chendamangalam.
