Gender-neutral outfits have been one of the most debated topics lately. While some welcome the idea as progressive, some others express their displeasure by mockingly asking whether men should now start wearing skirts. However, not many seem to know about ‘kilt’, a knee-length skirt-like garment worn by Scottish men as part of their traditional outfit.

The kilt originated as a traditional garment of the Gaelic men. Sir William Wallace, the protagonist of the Hollywood blockbuster movie ‘Braveheart’, played by Mel Gibson wears the kilt throughout the movie. The movie that was released in 1995 played a pivotal role in popularizing the kilt.

However, historical records say that Sir Wallace, who is revered as a patriotic hero of the Middle Ages didn’t wear kilt in real life. The kilt was mostly worn by men who lived in the Scottish Highlands. Sir William Wallace didn’t hail from this region.

Even though the kilt had attracted ridicule for looking similar to a skirt, it is now considered high fashion. The tartan pattern with wider plaid designs is mostly used in kilts. Celebrities like Muhammad Ali, Sean Connery, Richard Branson, Ewan McGregor and Gerard Butler have often worn a kilt.
