A 'slogan' T-shirt printed with the phrase "ALL DRESSED UP NOWHERE TO GO" was showcased during a recent clothing range presentation for an exclusive audience in Mumbai. There is no doubt that slogan T-shirts are gaining popularity and becoming the next trend. Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee is set to elevate India's presence in the global luxury fashion arena.
As the 'Sabyasachi' brand, which originated in the heritage city of Kolkata, marks its 25th anniversary, he is pioneering new pathways for Indian fashion. After a hiatus from fashion shows since 2016, Sabyasachi has unveiled a new collection to commemorate this milestone, celebrating his journey as the first Indian brand to make a significant impact on the international luxury fashion landscape.
Ready-to-wear luxury
Sabyasachi revived the saree and traditional attire for Indian women during an era dominated by Western fashion trends. Each time Bollywood celebrities showcased their 'Sabya' sarees, they sparked a desire among women to possess them. The resurgence of the saree, reimagined through Sabyasachi's unique style, also positively impacted the livelihoods of artisans across the nation. Also, the Indian bridal market flourished as brides eagerly waited for their opportunity to wear traditional garments designed by Sabyasachi.
There is an additional dimension to Sabyasachi's portrayal in the realm of bridal fashion. The designer has anticipated that in the beta generation, it's not lehengas and designer sarees that need to be crafted for women. The previous generation of women who believed they could only wear Sabyasachi for their weddings is no longer the focus. Whether it is a career-driven woman, a 'cat lady' or a 'dog dad', a denim enthusiast, or a middle-aged woman who wants to express themselves with elegance, the new Sabyasachi collection offers a diverse array of options. The concept of ready-to-wear luxury embodies the future of 'Sabya' fashion.
Sabyasachi comments on the writings featured in the new clothing collection, stating, "This is not merely a slogan t-shirt. It represents a genuine expression of emotion. Today, individuals purchase clothing primarily to share images of themselves on Instagram. This reflects the emptiness that has taken over our lives due to technological advancements. Technology cannot create luxury; it is solely the result of human craftsmanship."
Full of variety
The new global collection showcases an extensive array of ready-to-wear apparel, including dresses, coats, and leather skirts. It integrates craftsmanship inspired by Indian traditions, featuring intricate pictorial stitching and semi-precious stone embellishments. The linings of the coats and long jackets exhibit a luxurious touch characteristic of Indian design. Additionally, jackets and sarees adorned with floral motifs create a striking 3D effect, beautifully highlighting the artistry of hand stitching. The Bengal tiger logo, the face of the brand, is prominently displayed on the linings of the leather skirts.
For the first time, the collection also includes accessories crafted from ostrich leather. Set to launch in September, this collection will be available simultaneously in India and internationally. Sabyasachi emphasizes through these new designs that while the world may embrace minimalism, India should embody the 'maximalism' of its rich heritage and tradition. Let the 'Sabyasachi signature' on the magnificent canvas of Indian heritage redefine the essence of global luxury fashion!
