Shortly after the development, a section of senior doctors from other medical colleges in West Bengal said they too could follow suit.
They threatened to launch a hunger strike until death if their demands were not met by the West Bengal government within 24 hours.
The protest was triggered by the state government's alleged failure to address key issues, including enhanced safety and security in hospitals.
