This comfy house deserves a perfect 10!

Folks driving down the road to Chavakkad have set a landmark for themselves - a modern 3,418 sq ft house on 52 cents of land. No wonder, this! The owner wanted something out of the ordinary, a design that would never lose its sheen soon.

At the same time, it had to be in tandem with the climate of Kerala, to stand up to the weather in all its vagaries. Though the owner’s demands were quite justifiable and modest, architect-designer Faizal Nirman’s end product was a sure stunner, far exceeding the expectations of Mushtaque, the man of the house.

The elevation stands overlooking the road which winds along the southern side. The design was therefore drawn and the plan executed to have the house way away from the main road, which is what makes the elevation look stunning. The main highlight of the elevation is its sloping roofs set in different levels.

The gray-white exterior has been done with laterite in the column-beam style. The wide and expansive frontage is tastefully landscaped and adds to the look of the structure. A connection space between the car porch and the sit-out ensures a safe step-in to the sit-out even if it rains. A sitting area in the L-shaped sit-out offers a fine view of the lush greenery around.

A small verandah leads to the insides. The interiors, while offering expansiveness, provide much-needed privacy too. The drawing room to one side of the hall is a private space and a courtyard to the left adds to the interior decor.

The skylights up the courtyard bring in a bright glow inside. The dining area stands close to the courtyard. A wash area and a prayer space have also been provided near the dining space. The family living also finds room within the wide hall.

It is a combination of metal, teakwood and glass for the stairway. The cladding wall beside the stairway provides space for the TV unit. This is an eye-catching piece of design.

The highlight of the upper floor is a partition wall in CNC-cut design.

As the owner runs a business in sanitary ware and tiles, he was very particular about the quality and aesthetics of the interior decor. All the fittings are top notch. Teak wood, marine ply, veneer, mica and laminates have gone into the furnishing. While the main floors have been laid with matt-finish vitrified tiles, the drawing room and bedrooms have wooden floor tiles. And it is multiwood for the bridge that connects the entrance lobby with the sit-out.

There are four bedrooms in all, two up and two down with attached bathrooms and wardrobes. There are storage facilities in all bedrooms.

The modular kitchen is a stylish piece of work. All the kitchen gadgets have been placed in their in-built wall space. The kitchen decor looks elegant and stylish as it is finished in black and white aluminium composite lacquered glass. It is granite for the counter top. A breakfast counter and a work area complete the picture.

The house is airy and cool, thanks to its cross-ventilation. On the whole, here is a house high on design elements and perfect in utility factors.
