This Mammiyoor house on moderate budget has surprises galore

Mammiyoor house
The tastefully done landscaping amazingly blends with the design of the house.

Syam Krishnan, the assistant priest at the famed Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple, proudly shows around his brand new house at Mammiyoor. It was his greatest dream to build a house, in minimal style, in the five cents plot that he had inherited as ancestral property. The house, designed in the contemporary style, features a square shaped exterior. The 1650 sq ft house is designed by engineer Vineeth who is also Syam Krishnan’s close friend. The construction of the house, including landscaping and the boundary wall, was completed on a budget of Rs 36 lakh.

Blending styles

A unique construction style, which suited the nature of the locality and the general lifestyle here, was adopted. The stylish design makes maintenance of the house easier as Syam and his wife are employed. The expenses too had to be checked as the owner had given clear instructions that he intended to build a moderately budgeted house. The construction materials were meticulously chosen as the family was not interested in modifying their house according to the latest trends.

The tastefully done landscaping amazingly blends with the design of the house. The gate which looks like it has been made by arranging wooden planks is made of NCP panels. The unique design of the gate undoubtedly adds a rustic charm to the house. An idol of Lord Ganesha is fixed on the gate by doing CNC cutting on a multi-wood sheet. The front yard, paved with kota stones and the charming garden, enhance the overall look of the house.

Open interiors

The interiors emanate an elegant charm of minimalism. A sit-out, living and dining areas, an upper living area, kitchen, three bedrooms, patio and a beautiful balcony are featured in this house. There are many features which bring in natural sunshine to illuminate the interiors and there is an abundant supply of cool breeze as well. Lighter shades of colors adorn the interior spaces. The living and the dining areas are designed in ‘L’ shape. The old furniture, brought from Syam’s ancestral home, is modified to suit the contemporary look of the house. The gypsum false ceiling in teak finish and the unique cycle lamp elevates the classy look of the dining area. The leftover wall-papers, MDF and plywood are used to decorate the pooja space. The teak finish on plywood adds a regal charm to the spaces.

All the doors in the house, except the entrance door, are Tata’s ready-made steel doors. The entrance door, made in teak wood, emanate a luxurious elegance. Vitrified tiles in matte finish are paved on the floor. Cabinets in multi-wood are arranged in the bedrooms. The stairway which connects both the floors begins from the dining area. A bedroom and an upper living area complete the upper storey.

One could enter the balcony from the bedroom upstairs. The spacious sitting area on the upper storey is an ideal space to host parties. A swimming pool is built on the terrace in the backside of the house as the family members, belonging to the Namboothiri community, may require taking a ritual dip in the waters. The pool which is four feet deep can hold about 8000 liters water.

The kitchen is designed with all the modern facilities. Steel cabinets and granite counter top are arranged here. An adjacent work area completes the kitchen. As the owner was not ready to compromise on the quality of the materials, branded steel cabinets from Godrej is installed in the kitchen.
