Noushad’s brand new house at Pattarukulam near Manjeri in Malappuram could be easily termed as a beautiful and elegant dwelling, perfect for a middle class family. The house has been designed, with all the modern facilities that suit the interests and preferences of the family members. The smart designs and features of the house make the maintenance easier as well.

The house that stands in a 12.5 cents rectangular plot has been built by leaving enough space in the front yard. The landscaping done by paving Tandoor stones and grass in alternate layers add to the overall look of the house. This charming house, in 2417 sq ft area, has a car porch, sit-out, formal and family living areas, dining space, kitchen with an adjacent work area, four bedrooms, an upper living area and an open terrace.

The slanted roof, paved with roof tiles, suits the tropical climate of Kerala. The elevation is designed in a way which allows amazing views of the house from the three sides. Metal louvers are installed on both sides of the sit-out. Besides acting as a designer feature, these louvers make air circulation inside the house copious. The exterior walls feature lighter shades of hues to match the surrounding nature. The interiors too are designed in the white colour theme. These make the interior spaces look extremely pleasant and comfortable.

The formal living area, designed in double height, makes the spaces look vast and spacious. The bay window in the family living area is an eye-catching feature. The small courtyard beneath the stairway is beautified by paving shiny, round pebbles and artificial grass. The spectacular view of this courtyard could be enjoyed from both the living areas.

Vitrified tiles, in 80 cm x 80 cm, are paved on the floor in all the main spaces. Meanwhile, highlighted wooden tiles are used in the living area. False ceiling is done only in the areas where the beams have to be covered. Light points are directly installed in rest of the house. The skylights in the formal living area and the kitchen illuminates the interiors with natural sun shine. Interestingly, the sunlight that comes in through these skylights could be regulated.

The double-heighted roof in the living area makes sure that an amazing view of the ground floor is possible from the upper storey. The upper living area could be used as a utility space as well. It is from here that one could enter the open terrace.

The dining table is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate up to ten guests. The wash area and the prayer room are arranged beside the dining area.

The island kitchen is designed in the open style. The kitchen cabinets are done in marine plywood with laminate finish. An adjacent work area and a store room complete the kitchen space.

The bedrooms are arranged giving primary importance for storage facilities. There are built-in wardrobes in all the bedrooms.

“Noushad is a close friend of mine. Usually, when a friend's house is designed, differences of opinion may arise and that may affect the relationship as well.

However, in Noushad’s case, our friendship became warmer and stronger after the construction of the house,” says designer Faisal Niraman.
