The biggest challenge to build a house on the plot was the Z-shaped layout.

Haneefa, a physical education teacher and social worker, talks about his experiences of building a contemporary style house in Erummapetty in the Thrissur district. The family wanted a simple and comfortable house which doesn’t flaunt any over the top decor features. They wished for spacious interiors that receives lots of natural light and air and even a bit of greenery as well. However, the plot of land that Haneefa inherited posed several challenges.

The structure of the plot is like the English alphabet ‘Z’ and many discouraged the family saying that a house couldn’t be built here. It was then that Haneefa met architect Anas who was ready to take up the challenge and design a mesmerizing house here. Anas and Haneefa had many intense discussions before coming up with the final draft of the plan and designs.

Contemporary style

This unique house features a stylish box-shaped elevation that is quite eye-catching. The claddings, in cement board, make the elevation stand out. The structure is built a few meters away from the road and this gives enough privacy for the family members. The interiors are designed in the open style catering to interests of the family. Both exteriors and the interiors are amazingly designed to suit the tropical climate of Kerala. The architect has brilliantly created beautiful spaces that blend the features of the traditional and the contemporary styles. The landscaping makes the house closer to the nature outside.

Stylish interiors

This beautiful house has formal and family living areas, dining area, kitchen and four bedrooms. The common areas are arranged following the theme of minimalism, without overcrowding the spaces with furniture or décor. “I am a social worker too. There would often be meetings at my house.

So, the formal living room is a bit spacious to accommodate all the people. Pergola opening is given above the family living room that is designed in double height. Natural sun shine comes in through this space, illuminating the interiors. The prayer area and the stairway are beside the living area. You could get into the patio from the dining space itself,” says Haneefa. His brother and family lives close by. The patio of this house has been designed as an amazing common space where the families can gather.

The open kitchen faces the dining area. Lighter shades of hues don the kitchen. The cabinets are made using multi-wood and marine plywood. The counter top has been paved with Korean stone. All the modern appliances and gadgets have been arranged in this modular kitchen.

There are two bedrooms each on the two floors. The bedrooms are designed in minimal style and ensure privacy as well. Separate dressing areas are arranged in the master bedroom and the kids’ room.

The excellent cross ventilation plays a vital role in keeping the interiors pleasant and cool. The furniture is made using plywood and veneer. Plywood ceiling is done at some places as a highlight. It took around one and half years for completing the construction of this smartly designed house. “As each space has been meticulously designed, this house has a special place in our hearts,” says Haneefa.
