Bidula, a native of Elathur in Kozhikode, is leading a revolution in the field of home decor with her incredibly creative terracotta murals that stand out for their intricate detailing. She can create magic with terracotta by making various things like statues, curios and lamp shades that could be used to decorate the interiors.
Bidula began making terracotta décor items on a commercial level after completing a pottery course from an institute in Karnataka. She soon opened a production unit at her house itself. Now, she gets orders from both inside and outside Kerala. Her customers are mostly resorts, architects and interior designers who look for unique and stunning pieces in terracotta. Some would mail her pictures or drawings which Bidula would then craft in her work shop.
The mud that is required to make the items is imported from Bengaluru. It would take more than a month for the finished items to dry completely. These décor or crafts items would then be baked in hearth for the final touch up.
Besides lending an elegant charm to the spaces, the terracotta pieces can cool down the interiors as well, as mud has the capacity to draw in moisture. Bidila says she earns a decent amount by selling terracotta décor items. She adds that this is an excellent business for homemakers who have a flair for arts and crafts to make some extra income.
