Resmi Soman has ruled the mini screen for around a decade, playing the female lead in more than 60 prime time soap operas. After tying the knot, the actress flew to Dubai and took a break from acting. However, the Malayali audience has been eagerly waiting for their favourite actress to return to the mini screen. This year, Resmi did make a comeback through a serial aired on Mazhavil Manorama. The pretty actress talks about her career and shares interesting snippets about the houses that have a special place in her heart.
Home memories
Though born in Kerala, Resmi spent most of her childhood in Saudi Arabia where her father worked. Her mother had completed engineering; but chose to be a stay at home mother. Resmi is their only child.
“I have vivid memories about my mother’s ancestral home on the banks of the Bharathapuzha River. It was a traditional naalukettu that had attic spaces and an inner courtyard. Besides, there were lots of trees in the spacious plot as well. There was a ghat closer to our house, for us to take a dip in the Bharathapuzha River. Even though I am a single child I have dozens of cousins with whom I used to play and enjoy. Most of my childhood memories are connected to that house. Later, when my grandparents became old, it became difficult for them to manage the house. So, the house was sold. Had we still owned that old house, it could have been turned into a home stay. When I look back now, I can only think about that house with regret,” says Resmi.
Resmi’s father hails from a beautiful village called Kuttancherry. He had owned a mesmerizing house in the middle of a paddy field there. Later, he purchased land in Guruvayur and constructed a two storied concrete house. It was here that Resmi spent her growing years and made her entry into the mini screen.
Serial and cinema
Resmi had been passionate about classical dance since childhood. She was studying in class seven when she made her debut as a child artist. Veteran actor Madhu, who happened watch her performance, offered her a role in a television serial. Meanwhile, she had played notable roles in movies like Ishtamanu Nooruvattam and Sradha.
“I had felt an attachment to quite a few houses that were the locations of serials. When a few episodes of a serial are shot at a house, we feel as if it is our own house. Later, I feel sad leaving that house when the shoot gets wrapped up,” notes the actress.
“I own a house in Kochi. I had dreamed a lot about it and had decorated the interiors as per my wishes. But, no one lives in that house. Our house at Guruvayur has a spacious hall where I often practice dance. I have my own room here. But, when my cousins and friends are here, my room becomes theirs as well. The house would then be filled with the happiness and enjoyment of togetherness. It is the same when I visit their homes too,” explains Resmi.
Family
Resmi’s husband Gopinath is a businessman based in Dubai. The actress too has been living in Dubai for the last five years. She says she had chosen to be a homemaker during this time. However, the actress has been practising dance even though she was missing from television. She also started a Youtube channel to communicate with her fans and to share interesting details about her trips. Resmi has been appearing in the television serial Anuragam which is aired on Mazhavil Manorama since January this year.
Lockdown days
Resmi is currently staying at her home in Guruvayur. She has been travelling from Dubai and back regularly, ever since she began acting in the serial. “I flew here two and a half months ago and soon the Covid 19 situation worsened. My friends say that it is quite serious in Dubai. Now, I can return only after everything settles down. I indulge in cooking experiments using the ingredients that are available in our backyard. I post the videos of it in my channel as well. These videos are earning positive feedback. Besides, I watch movies, keep the house clean and enjoy reading too. These are some of my favourite pastimes during the lockdown days,” Resmi signs off.
