Aslam, an expatriate, owned a 24 cents riverside plot, the layout of which posed quite a few challenges, at Mukkam in Kozhikode, Kerala. As the nearby plots were a few feet above this one, the plot looked complicated and often got flooded during the harsher monsoons. When Aslam decided to build his dream home here, many dissuaded him, saying that the plot wasn’t perfect. However, Aslam didn’t back off and went ahead with the construction of his majestic house in the plot.
Building the foundation for the house was a strenuous task. The structure is raised using the pillar footing technology to prevent the water from entering the house even if the plot gets flooded. Aslam said many were skeptical about this in the initial phase of the construction.
The elevation features mixed contemporary style which instantly draws attention. An amazing blend of flat, sloped and curved roofs make the exteriors look chic and stylish. The structure is built by leaving enough space for the front yard. Tandoor stones and natural stones which allow the rain water to seep easily into the ground are paved in the front yard. The car porch meanwhile is built separately from the structure. The well is just behind the car porch. Planter boxes are installed here to block the view of the well from outside.
The spectacular house, sprawled in 3000 sqft, has a car porch, sit-out, formal and family living areas, dining space, courtyard, kitchen with an adjacent work area and two bedrooms on the ground floor. Meanwhile, an upper living area, two more bedrooms and a balcony are arranged on the first floor.
The interiors are vast and spacious. Lots of windows are installed to ensure adequate supply of cool breeze and air circulation.
The furnishing is mostly done in plywood and veneer finish. The custom-made furniture perfectly blends with the theme of the house. The regal beauty of Italian marble lends an elegant hue to the interiors. Vitrified tiles and wooden finish tiles too are used for flooring in this house.
The elegant design of the stairway is the highlight of the interiors. The handrails feature the classic combination of wood and toughened glass. The courtyard, designed in double height, is illuminated with the pleasant sunshine. A study area has been arranged beneath the stairway to make the interiors space efficient.
The elegance of wood dons the formal living area. The curved ceiling here is highlighted with wooden paneling. Gypsum false ceiling and the LED light fittings make the rest of the interiors look extremely attractive. Single walls painted in highlighter shades grants a luxurious look to the interiors.
The kitchen cupboards are done in marine plywood. Meanwhile, the counter top is paved with nano white. There is an adjacent work area to make the kitchen more efficient.
Wooden finish tiles are used for flooring in the bedrooms. All the bedrooms are bath-attached and have full length wardrobes for storage.
The perfect designs in GI and glass add a touch of chic elegance to the balcony. Meanwhile, the planter boxes make this area greener and pleasant as well.
The family is proud and elated that they could overcome the challenges and criticisms and finally build their dream dwelling here. Though water gushed into the plot in the recent rains, it didn’t enter the house. The amazing structure, thus, becomes the symbol of excellent planning and smart designing.
