Chavakkad house on a moderate budget becomes internet sensation

Two years ago, a video report about architect Hidayaths’ own house built on a moderate budget of Rs 25 lakhs had appeared on the Veedu channel. Nishad and Shamla, both natives of Chavakkad, near Thrissur, Kerala, watched the episode and were impressed by the amazing designs and features of the house. Even though the plan was already prepared and construction had begun, the couple soon brought in Hidayath for giving life to their dream dwelling. Hidayath had made significant changes in the original plan of the house and built a stunning abode without burning a hole in his clients’ pocket. At a glance, Nishad and Shamla’s house looks like a copy of Hidayath’s own house. A few months ago, the couple had posted the pictures of their brand new house on the social media. The pictures soon became viral and people have been calling them to know more about their splendid abode.

This single storey house designed in 1500 sq ft area stands elegantly on a 10 cents plot. Provisions have been left to construct an additional floor, if required, in the future. There is a car porch, sit out, living area, dining space, courtyard, three bedrooms, and kitchen with work area in this house.

The walls are built using the hurudees blocks with a coat of polish over it. Interestingly, there is no need for plastering or painting over them. Meanwhile, only a coat of primer has been applied on the white coloured walls. This played a vital role in keeping a check on the expenses. Besides, it helps in reducing the heat inside the house. Mud tiles with floral designs are paved on the ceiling inside. This too lowers the heat and makes the spaces extremely comfortable as well. There is a stair outside which leads to the open terrace. MS grill is installed as a designer feature here. The additional grills are placed on the side of the house for the creepers and vines to spread.

The interiors are designed in the open theme which makes the spaces look incredibly vaster. The house is designed by giving prime importance to excellent supply of natural light and fresh air. Skylights are installed on most places to illuminate the interiors with golden sunshine.

An interesting wall art of a tree on white surface is what acts as a partition in the formal living area.

Most furniture pieces were gifted to the couple before the house warming ceremony. The remaining few had been handpicked by Nishad and Shamla. The courtyard is the most striking space in the interiors. This space is decorated with exotic palm trees in pots. The skylights fill this area with pleasant sunshine as well.

Meanwhile, mini courtyards have been arranged closer to two bedrooms. These courtyards too bring in lots of natural light. The bedrooms are bath attached. There are separate entrances for a bathroom which is common to two bedrooms.

The kitchen is furnished in the open style. A quaint breakfast counter too has been arranged here. Attractive wall tiles decorate the splash back in the kitchen. Meanwhile, the cabinets are done in aluminium fabrication. The counter top has been paved with glossy granite.

Instead of paving the front yard with interlocking blocks, the couple decided to retain the natural charm of the yard. Beautiful shading trees and plants set the perfect backdrop for this amazing house.

The construction of this house, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on a very reasonable budget of Rs 25 lakh. The family is thrilled that they got the house of their dreams on a pocket friendly budget. Meanwhile, the designer is proud that his own house had attracted so many admirers.

Among the many factors that helped in reducing the expenses, building the wall with hurudess blocks played a vital role. This saved the expenses for plastering and painting. UPVC grilles are used on the windows and the compound wall as well. The kitchen is furnished in aluminium fabrication. And finally, moderately priced marbonite are used for flooring in this house.
