Suresh, an artist, built his brand new house at Dhanuvachupuram in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. More than a place to live in, this abode has been designed as a creative space where artists can gather, discuss or read. Lots of people often visit this house as it is the perfect spot to express their creative faculties. Apart from the main gate, there is a wicket gate as well. Moreover, Suresh wanted to build his dream dwelling without burning a hole in his pocket.

The elevation features the classy flat box style. The exterior walls don the serene charm of the white hue. Lighter shades of colours are used in the interiors as well. The flat roof indeed is a smart feature in case the family decides to build an additional floor in future.

This stylish abode, designed in 1500 sq ft area, has a living space, dining area, courtyard, open kitchen, two bedrooms, library and a party hall. Apart from the two bedrooms for Suresh and his mother, the rest of the spaces have been arranged as multipurpose areas.

Instead of concrete, the interior walls have gypsum plastering, which helps in reducing the heat inside the house. The ceilings in the bathroom and the dining area have been arranged in the ‘open-to-sky’ style. This brings lots of pleasant sunshine into the house. Meanwhile, the GI louvers on the walls welcome the cool breeze.

The open kitchen has been furnished giving prime importance to storage facilities. The bedrooms, meanwhile, are simple yet functional.

Suresh says that he almost ran out of money by the time the construction was over. So, a simple fencing using wire mesh has been done instead of a compound wall. Interestingly, creepers are allowed to spread on the fence. Soon, this would turn into a wall of lush greenery. Besides, there are countless varieties of plants and shrubs in the garden. The construction of this beautiful house, including the structure and the furnishing, was completed on a moderate budget of Rs 26 lakh.

Among the many factors that helped in reducing the expenses, making the house space-efficient by reducing the area in sq ft played a vital role. Old furniture pieces and wardrobes are reused here. The ceilings are retained in exposed concrete finish instead of plastering them. Most importantly, the wire mesh fencing looks stylish and costs way lesser than a concrete compound wall.
