Thekkumthalakkal Jomon who runs a business in Kavalam in Alappuzha, Kerala, and his wife Rani have built their brand new house in a 20 cents plot, a few kilometers away from town. Earlier, their house was closer to their showroom. However, the family decided to build another house as they wanted to move away from the bustle of the city.
Jomon and Rani had contacted well known engineer Sreekanth Pangapad to help them build a single storey house with four bedrooms. Sreekanth, who has built countless homes all over the state, has done a commendable job, designing the perfect abode as per the family’s wishes.
There is a sit out, formal and family living areas, dining space, courtyard, kitchen with a work area and four bedrooms in this beautiful house that has an area of 2000 sqft. Most of the trees and plants in this plot have been retained to protect the greenery in the plot.
Kavalam was inundated in the 2018 mega floods. So, the foundation has been built in a way that the basement comes way above the water level that was recorded then. Hard rocks have been layered as the foundation on this plot as it doesn’t have a sturdy surface. Meanwhile, the foundation works were completed by installing the RCC belt and plinth beam above the hard rock layers.
The walls are built in baked bricks. Instead of a concrete roof, GI truss roof paved with ceramic tiles have been installed. The false ceiling done in anjili planks (artocarpus hirsutus) grants a majestic look to the interiors. As these planks have been arranged as a separate layer, there is enough space between the ceiling and the roof for storage. Moreover, this feature helps in reducing the heat inside the house.
Jomon and family who have lived amid the flutter of the city have moved into the safety of their brand new house during the pandemic times. Now, they feel relaxed and enjoy the calm and peaceful atmosphere of the suburbs.
