Asokan, a native of Edamuttom in Thrissur, Kerala, is a painting worker. He had approached designer Santhilal of CostFord to design a comfortable house for a small family of him, his wife and two daughters. Besides, he wanted to build his dream abode without burning a hole in his pocket. Santhilal, who had built countless low budget homes, designed a fabulous house for just Rs 10 lakh for Asokan and family.
The earthy charm of bricks is the highlight of the exteriors. Bricks were specially brought from Palakkad to construct the structure. The walls aren’t plastered or painted and exude the rustic elegance of exposed style.
Built in 840 sqft, this amazing abode has a quaint sit out, living and dining areas, library, kitchen and two bedrooms. Interestingly, an equal area of space has been left vacant as an open terrace. This would allow the family to build an additional floor if required in the future.
The open interiors make the spaces look vaster. The ceiling, meanwhile, has been done using the filler slab technology in which plastering is done after placing the mud bricks. This helps in maintaining a cooler and pleasant atmosphere inside the house.
The construction of this house was completed in stages. The structure was completed two years ago and the family had moved into the house. Later, the interiors were furnished as and when the family had money to spare. Experts hail this as a smart model that could be copied. It is better to wait patiently and become the proud owner of a beautiful and well-furnished home rather than getting trapped in financial burden after availing of huge loans.
Among the various factors that helped in keeping a check on the expenses, building the structure by reducing the space in area played a pivotal role. The interiors are furnished minimally. The walls have been built in the rat trap method where holes are there in alternate layers. This helped in saving the bricks. Instead of paving tiles, the floor has cement finish. Wooden furniture has been completely avoided. Instead, furniture pieces in steel finish are used in the interiors. Moreover, the painting works were done by the owner himself.
