A retired couple, whose children are settled abroad and has an aged father approached architect George Chittoor to design a simple and functional house that require minimal maintenance.

This beautiful house at Jagathy in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, stands out for its simple yet elegant features. The elevation in box style dons contemporary – minimalist style. Lighter shades of hues that are soothing to the eyes are used inside and outside the house.

Designed in 1800 sqft, this fabulous abode has a car porch, sit out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area and two bedrooms in the ground floor. Meanwhile, there is a bedroom in the upper floor for the children to stay when they are home for the holidays.

The interiors are designed in the open style. The family currently stays only in the ground floor. So, the open spaces make communication easier and grant a calm ambience too. Interestingly, the spaces aren’t congested by packing it with unnecessary furniture. Besides, the use of timber too has been limited. The window panes and other furnishing are done using aluminum. Meanwhile, vitrified tiles are paved on the floor.

The entrance door opens to an ‘L’ shaped hall. The formal living area is furnished minimally and there is a TV unit here.

Meanwhile, the dining space has a double height ceiling. The tall wall here is lined with glass panel to invite sunshine in abundance. There is a pergola skylight above the dining area too. One could get to the garden from the dining area through a glass sliding door. Besides, cool breeze enters the house when this glass door is opened.

The bedrooms are bath attached. The kitchen is uniquely designed to make it easier for aged people to use the spaces without any difficulty. Everything is arranged within the hands’ reach in the kitchen, making it extremely functional.

The couple enjoys gardening and has decorated their front yard with countless flower pots and other plants. The courtyard beneath the stairway too is adorned with beautiful indoor plants to add a hint of greenery inside the house. Besides, they grow a vegetable garden in the terrace.

This amazing house is smartly conceptualized as it perfectly suits the needs and interests of the aged parents. The family and the architect truly deserve credit for moving away from stock patterns and unnecessary design gimmicks by giving priority to functionality and amenities that are only required.
