It is hard to believe the chic house of Asif Kanjirathingal at Thamarassery, in Kozhikode, Kerala, was built 25 years ago. The NRI family decided to give a makeover to the house in connection with the marriage of Asif's daughter. The houseowner wanted to ‘bring’ his house from the 1990-era to the 2020s - both in appearance and in terms of amenities. The interior and exterior sported the design the 1990s.
A complete overhaul was made in the outer appearance of the house by replacing the old slop roof with flat boxed roof on one side. Steel truss was built on top of the slanted reinforced cement concrete roof over the car porch and balcony to place the tiles. The double height show wall gives a stunning look to the facade. The show wall has been designed by giving grooves on cement wall and then applied texture paint.
The plot lies facing the main road. The lacklustre facade was done away with by knocking down the small shop and a godown, that once stood on the old courtyard near the roadside, making way for a spacious courtyard that has been laden with interlocked tiles. This gives an uninterrupted view of the trendy look of the house.
A car porch, sit-out, living room, dining room, kitchen, 4 bedrooms, an upper living area and a balcony fit into the 2,500 sqft space dwelling.
Unwanted partitions were removed to make the interior semi-open, allowing more light and air into the house.
Old furniture and curtains were replaced with new ones, apart from changing the ceiling and lighting system and the house now breathes in refreshing changes of modernity. Two bedrooms on each floor also underwent makeovers. The headside wall in the rooms was highlighted and more storage facility incorporated. All the bedrooms now have an attached bathroom facility, while new tiles were laid in the existing bathrooms.
The elegance and perfection in the customised furnishing bear the signature of Asif's daughter, who herself is an interior designer. The family moved into the renovated house on February 10. But the brilliance in the makeover of a 25-year-old house leaves a perplexed look on the relatives and friends of the family who had frequented the house earlier.
