Superlatives inadequate for this showstopper mansion in Kozhikode

Showstopper mansion in Kozhikode
In no time the house in all its splendour caught the fancy of passers-by.

Dentist Afasal Usman and his family were worried that their narrow plot extending to 30 cents would play spoilsport to their dreams to build a home with an out-of-the-box design idea. Surprisingly, the very same plot at Vadakara in Kozhikode district in Kerala now houses a 4,000sqft symbol of ingenuity. The dream house featuring traditional-cum-colonial style facade has now turned out to be a show-stopper.

Afsal was quite averse to the idea of adopting mundane designs for his dream home and instead wanted it to offer an exotic design. And hence the house does sport a couple of quirky traits such as Malayasian imported tiles on slanted concrete roofs, interiors embracing the classic theme, tall walls and high roofs. The common areas inside the house boast of double-height ceilings that serve to flush out the hot air inside and offer a perfectly natural cooling system.

The durability of the front yard is reassured by installing tandoor stone tiles. You won’t get to see a car porch here that tends to obstruct the incredible front view of the dwelling. Instead, the space next to the sidewall has been tactfully used to park the vehicle. The area could be further utilised to set up an industrial car porch in the future. The 4000sqft house accommodates a sit-out, guest living space, family living room, dining area, prayer area, kitchen, work area, 4 bedrooms, office room, upper living area and a balcony.

It would be hard to take your glance off the captivating ceilings as you step inside the house. The elegance and brightness of interiors are enhanced through classy false ceilings. Gypsum ceilings embellished by multi-wood CNC design cuts highlighted with LED lighting give a drastic makeover for the interior of the house. Italian marbles are used in flooring the common area and furniture (some imported, while others custom-made) all complement the stylish inside.

The main door opens to a spacious hall that has a double-height ceiling touching the ground and first floors. Next to the hall is the dining space arranged in the centre. Adjoining the dining area features a courtyard, the key attraction of the house. Painted in serene white, the courtyard gets ample of sunlight with the help of vertical skylight on the walls and pergola ceiling. During the night, the warm-tone hanging lamps from the ceilings radiate the ambience to the next level. The courtyard is given artificial greenery with synthetic turf flooring with a sitting space nearby and a hanging chair.

The living room has been designed to give privacy to other areas. The yellow textured wall is the main highlight here. Similar highlight walls are used in other parts of the house.

The double-height wall beside the stairway is adorned and highlighted by wallpaper, imported from Bahrain. The wash area is neatly earmarked with concealed storage facility. A sun-shaped artwork in the mirror adds elegance to the wash area.

Multiwood has been used on kitchen cabinets and nano white marble is laid on countertop. The kitchen is equipped with an in-built oven and fridge. The open counter adjoining the dining area fits well into the role of a gorgeous open breakfast corner dotted with trendy high chairs.

There are two bedrooms each on the ground and first floors, with full-length wardrobes giving adequate thrust to a storage facility. The stunning yet sophisticated feature of the bedrooms is the fully-mirrored wardrobes that make the rooms appear larger than they originally are. The rooms also have attached bathrooms and separate dressing areas.

The most appealing factor is that the house offers varying visual experiences at different points of the day; all made possible through distinct shades of paints and profile lights used in the exterior walls.

One thing for sure, the sleek and sophisticated house has become a showstopper in the place. With all its uniqueness and richness in style, Afsal’s abode is now the talk of the town.
