Shahul Hameed and his family had a handful demands in store when they started planning for a house in 15 cents of land at Chavakkad in Thrissur, Kerala. They wished to have an elaborate front yard with an attractive landscape, refreshing interiors with abundance in leafy decor, natural lighting and air flow. More importantly, it should be an ideal retreating space to wipe off your boredom, no matter you are stuck inside for days together.
The green texture in the design starts off from the front yard, designed by retaining the fruit trees in the compound. Outdoor stone tiles are neatly laid out with grass in between the grids. The house designed in contemporary box style elevation has made use of MS grills to allow free flow of air and light.
A car porch, sit-out, formal living area, family living space, dining room, courtyard, kitchen, work area, balcony all fit well in the 4,700sqft house. The formal/family living areas set in double height ceiling add depth and dimension to the rest of the house, apart from opening an endless possibility of cross ventilation.
What awaits next is a unique yet exhilarating experiment in natural lighting and air to stream in - a lengthy courtyard from the outer area that stretches through the family living area, master bedroom and culminates at the kitchen.
Different flooring types have been experimented such as vitrified tiles in common area, granites in corridors, while wooden finished tiles fill the floors of guest living area.
The false ceiling in gypsum-cum-veneer finish and lighting give a sophisticated accent to the interiors. Otherwise, the ceilings stick to the simple format without many gimmicks.
The staircase paves way for a new design statement blended in three different styles. Apparently there are no railings in the first leg. The balustrade begins in the second landing while the railings at the last leg are echoed in stump theme.
Each floor has two bedrooms with attached bathroom, wardrobe and dressing area.
A spacious open kitchen gets the sleek touch of modernity with cupboards in marine plywood complementing the granite countertop. The breakfast table that is tucked next to the courtyard offers a comfortable dining area within the kitchen space. The glass doors separating the courtyard allow fresh air to stream into the kitchen.
An array of indoor plants that adorn the courtyard are revitalised with the help of sunlight seeping in through the pergola glass roofing above. This assures the days are filled with ample of sunlight. Moreover, the design features a host of inspiring techniques for unrestricted breeze paths which make fans a non-inevitable entity inside house. In a nut shell, the house in a small plot has fulfilled the ‘big desires’ of the expatriate family.
