One day architect Suneeb got a call from Abu Dhabi. Sudheer, a mechanical engineer in a UAE-based petroleum company, at the other end wanted to refurbish his 30-year-old house in Vadanappalli in Thrissur district, Kerala and pump in the youthful glow of the time and make it feel more comfortable with state-of-the-art amenities. It was all the more challenging for Suneeb and yet he patiently worked on a design plan in the stipulated budget and waited for his client’s feedback. So impressed was Sudheer with the design, that he did not have to think twice to start the construction.

The output might seem like storybook magic. The drastic makeover of the 2,400 sqft old-fashioned house into a trendy 3,300 sqft abode is worth appreciative. A family living room, which now houses the TV unit, and a verandah adjoining the family living are the additional elements juxtaposed with the original structure to define the new outlook.

Adding character and style to the abode are the nearby small skylight area that helped to make interiors brighter during daytime and a hanging swing to invoke positive vibes of natural lighting for anyone who comes to sit back and relax on the moving couch.

The remodelled design, undoubtedly, makes a stronger first impression. The choice to increase the size of bedrooms and replace quaint windows with new ones truly paid off. The size and new design of windows transformed the whole structure into an inviting facade.

The kitchen, equipped with new storage units made of acrylic panels and marine wood, was pushed to the rear area. Space next to the kitchen is devoted to the laundry room and crockery shelf. Curious though, the laundry unit opens directly to the new working kitchen.

Both the attached bathrooms on the ground floor have been expanded in size with due thrust on a bigger wet shower area. A prayer area, a common bathroom and a handwash counter, that fits perfectly beneath the stair-landing area, are the new entrants after the makeover.

The old stairway though left unaltered is spruced up intelligently with wood panels covering the steps. The dark stair cabin area is made brighter by fitting a glass panel in the vent created by cutting out a slice of concrete slab in the ceiling.

Both the bedrooms on the first floor also have attached bathrooms. Another element of exterior upgrade was achieved by placing glass barricades around the open terrace next to the balcony. Terracotta tiles are laid on balcony and open terrace, while an extra care has been taken to avoid leaks on the terrace by giving waterproof security.

Perforated clay windows adorn the balcony passage where comfortable stone sittings are arranged to make it an ideal relaxation zone. The fact that the complete overhaul of the house, including the interiors, was completed in Rs 35 lakh is sure to leave you awestruck.
