Minimalism is the concept of this expatriate house in Mahe

Thanheer, an expatriate hailing from Mahe, decided to rope in an architect after completing the structure of the new house in 10 cents of land adjacent to his ancestral home at Kallamala. Given the fact that the family mostly spends time abroad, Mohammad Asmath, the architect, did a brilliant job by working on the design rooted in the concept of minimalism especially when it comes to the maintenance factor. The contemporary box style elevation wears an elegant look with brick cladding tiles affixed on one side of the exterior walls, while cement grooves pep up the white-painted wall on the other side.

The 2,800sqft house has a car porch, sit-out, formal living space, dining area, kitchen, work area, four bedrooms, upper hall and a balcony. However, instead of falling for the vanity in the interior decor, the house owner chose to leave the top floor unfurnished until he comes down to settle in Kerala. However, there was no compromise in choosing quality materials to spruce up the ground floor. Thanheer's father-in-law who runs a business in marble and sanitary ware helped to adorn the interior with superior class decor, be it the marble tiles covering the floor or furniture made of plywood-cum-veneer.

The main entrance leads to formal living area in a double-height ceiling, which serves as the connecting space between the two floors. A TV unit is tucked into the living space with a partitioned unit.

The modular kitchen gets a chic glow with PU-painted plywood cabinets. A pantry kitchen with a breakfast counter has been set up, apart from the working kitchen. This area serves the double purpose of study table-cum-dining area for kids.

There are two bedrooms each on the first and ground floors. They are equipped with attached bathroom and wardrobes for increased storage capacity. The bedrooms downstairs are made brighter and more attractive using LED bulbs hidden behind false ceiling.

After the construction work during the Covid standoff, the housewarming function was held in January this year.  Undoubtedly, the abode has been intelligently designed to suit the lifestyle of the family.
