Nihas Umar’s brand new abode at Chandiroor in Alappuzha district in Kerala stands out for the smart execution of the splendid design features that amazingly overcomes the spatial challenges posed by a smaller plot. The 7 cents plot was about 2 feet below the road level. The plot was levelled before the construction began, as the designers foresaw the possibility of flooding in this low lying plot, during the heavy monsoons. The structure was built after erecting three sturdy pillars on the levelled plot. Now, the house stands in 5 cents after separating area for the front yard.
The majestic roofing of this house is what attracts instant attention. The owner who runs a business of roofing shingles did not shy away from trying novel designs in the roofing of his new house too. The multiple shades of the shingles grant a unique charm to the elevation of the house. After building a flat roof, a taller GI truss roof has been installed over it. Shingles were then paved on the truss roof. The space between the GI truss roof and the flat roof could be used as storage or a multi utility area. Moreover, this feature helps reduce the heat inside the house as the sun rays do not directly hit the roof. Dormer windows that are seen on colonial mansions are the highlights of the elevation.
Designed in 2630 sqft, this splendid dwelling has a car porch, sit out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area, upper living space, four bedrooms and a study space. The common areas in the interiors are designed in the open style. This makes the interiors look and feel vaster even though the house has been built on a smaller plot.
The incredible charm of the LED light fittings perfectly complements the designer false ceiling in the formal living area. Classy L shaped furniture pieces adorn this area. A semi partition has been installed here to separate the living and the dining areas. Meanwhile, vitrified tiles in matte finish have been paved on the floor, creating a harmony of simple yet elegance design elements.
The dining table is pretty standard and can accommodate up to six guests. The pebble decoration beneath the glass table top is an interesting feature. A study space has been separated, just beside the dining area, by ensuring enough privacy. The wash area, meanwhile, is arranged close to the study space.
The hand railings of the stairway features stainless steel which looks chic. The steps, meanwhile, have been paved with black granite. The double height wall beside the stairway is highlighted with golden hued wall paper. This stairway leads to a quaint living area which is decorated with wooden finished wall papers and other interesting décor.
There are two bedrooms each in both the floors. False ceiling in unique designs grants a cozy vibe to the bath attached bedrooms. Moreover, the custom made wardrobes too add to the overall look and facilities of the bedroom.
The kitchen cabinets done in plywood are completed with acrylic finish. Meanwhile, the counter top has been paved with black granite. The wall tiles with glossy finish that are pasted on the backsplash add a unique sheen to the kitchen area.
Besides the two floors, the spacious attic space between the flat and the truss roof makes this house extremely space efficient. The guests are often wowed by the impeccable designs and features of this house that they forget that it has been built in just 5 cents.
