Contemporary Kanyakumari house in small plot charms with chic designs

The box style pattern of the elevation effectively overcomes this spatial challenge.

This amazing abode in Thakkala, Kanyakumari district in the southernmost tip of India is special in so many ways. A place where the beautiful cultures of Tamil Nadu and Kerala merge, Thakkala comes under the Padmanabapuram municipality. Even though the iconic Padmanabapuram palace is within the state premises of Tamil Nadu, it is owned and managed by the government of Kerala.

The house stands in a 6.5 cents plot that is rectangular in the front side. The box style pattern of the elevation effectively overcomes this spatial challenge. The walls are built in bricks as the building materials are cheaper in Tamil Nadu than in Kerala. The use of timber has been limited to keep a check on the expenses. Instead, alternate materials that are durable and affordable like glass and PVC are used for furnishing.

Even though a family of four lives in this house, guests and relatives often gather here whenever there is a special occasion or a festival. So, the family wanted six bedrooms to host their guests who like to stay over. Arranging six comfortable bedrooms in this house that has been built on a small plot shows the success of effective planning and smart designing.

Designed in 3580 sqft, this fabulous dwelling has a sit out, living and dining areas, courtyard, and prayer area, kitchen with an adjacent work area, six bedrooms and an upper hall. There is a glass door on one side of the formal living area. This opens to the owner’s sister’s house that stands on the next plot. There is a door like this in her house too. So, if these two doors are opened, both houses would merge into a spacious and vaster mega home.

The green courtyard in double height is the highlight of this house. One could grab a view of this charming space from most of the areas in the house. The walls of the courtyard have been built using perforated ACP sheets. This ensures abundant supply of natural light and air inside the house. The wash area has been arranged just beside the courtyard. Meanwhile, the prayer area that is decorated with classy wooden and glass finish is on the other side.

The open kitchen faces the spacious dining area. The kitchen cabinets are done in multi wood finish. The counter top, meanwhile, has been paved with nano white.

There are two bedrooms in the ground floor while four are in the upper storey. The bath attached bedrooms have in – built wardrobes too.

The construction of this house had begun during the pandemic times. Even though the construction got delayed due to the lockdown and scarcity of materials and workers, the family is happy that they have finally moved into their dream abode.
