This NRI house in Kozhikode stands out for its unique design

The fabulous blend of plain – flat designs in multiple layers add an elegant grace to the elevation.

Askar Rahman, an expatriate is happy to share his experiences of building his dream abode near Farook College in Kozhikode, Kerala. Like all Keralites who are settled abroad, Askar too had dreamed of building a house of his own at his hometown. He wanted his house to have a unique and interesting look that would attract attention. Askar and his family are settled in Qatar and would be home only during the holidays. So the house was designed to make maintenance easier.

The fabulous blend of plain – flat designs in multiple layers add an elegant grace to the elevation. The car porch is projected from the façade to give the structure a unique look. A padipura or the traditional gateway is built parallel to the ca porch, creating a perfect harmony of eye catching symmetry.

The cladding wall built using bricks that are imported from Iran is the highlight of the elevation. Besides granting an elegant look, this brick wall plays a pivotal role in ensuring cross ventilation inside the house.

Designed in 4000 sqft, this amazing abode has a car porch, sit-out, formal and family living areas, dining space, four bedrooms and bathrooms.

The folding glass door in the dining area opens to the green courtyard that is separated by the beautiful wall with brick jali works. The unique jali works ensure air circulation, grating a pleasant and comfortable ambience inside the house.

Fresh and cool air enters the dining area when the folding glass door is opened. Meanwhile, the hot air would be pushed out through the jali wall. The double height areas make the interiors look and feel incredibly spacious.

A combination of Italian marble and kota stones have been used for flooring in this smartly designed house. The custom-made furniture has been made in ash wood.

The stairway features an interesting design that makes it space-efficient and compact too. An in–built sitting area has been arranged in the first landing that is designed after the first two steps. Interestingly, the glass hand railings too begin here. The next landing, meanwhile, has been turned into a study space.

Two bedrooms each have been arranged on both the floors. The bath attached bedrooms have in–built wardrobes for storage and separate dressing spaces too. The bedrooms in the upper storey open to the beautiful balconies from where the amazing views of nature could be enjoyed.

It took four years to complete the construction of this house. Meanwhile, the construction got stalled for almost a year owing to the lockdown. Askar says that he had overseen the construction of his dream abode, mostly through WhatsApp and video calls. He even travelled to Kerala a few times to make sure that the construction was progressing as planned.

Askar and his family feel happy and proud when their relatives and friends say great opinions about their brand new house.
