A charming Kottakal house with twin facades stands out for its design

The box shaped balcony is the highlight of the elevation that draws instant attention.

Malappuram native Shamseer, who is a civil engineer, is thrilled to share his experiences of designing and building his own house in his hometown in Kottakal. Meanwhile, he had entrusted noted designer Asar Juman to design the interiors of his dream abode.

The family-owned a 16 cents ‘L’ shaped plot that is narrower near the road and wide and spacious inside. The elevation has been designed to suit this unique layout of the plot. The sloped roof in multiple levels has been paved with shingles. The box-shaped balcony is the highlight of the elevation that draws instant attention. From here, one could enjoy the views of the vibrant streets.

Interestingly, this house has two ‘faces’. The elevation that is visible from the road dons a classy look while it has a different look when viewed from the front yard. The front yard, meanwhile, has been paved with natural stones and grass in alternate layers. Baby mettle has been paved on the rest of the area.

Designed in 2700 sqft, this amazing abode has a sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area and four bedrooms. The car porch isn’t built yet as the family is settled abroad and they are here only during the holidays. A lightweight structure could be easily added in case the family needs a car porch in the future. As the owner is a civil engineer, the plan of the house was drawn in a calculated and well-planned way.

Vitrified tiles have been used for flooring in this house. The custom-made furniture is mostly made in plywood with veneer finish. The entrance door, meanwhile, opens to the formal living area. This area has been separated by paving wooden finished tiles on the floor. A shelf that boasts of attractive jali works too has been used to separate the spaces.

The dining area, stairway and wash area are all part of the spacious hall. Interestingly, a study area too has been arranged beneath the stairway to save space. The unique design of the dining table in the lightweight and compact style is quite interesting.

The stairway features a classy combination of wood and glass. The glass ceiling on the upper hall plays a pivotal role in illuminating the interiors with golden sunshine.

The kitchen cabinets are done in plywood with laminate finish. The countertop, meanwhile, has been paved with nano white. A mini breakfast counter and high chairs too have been arranged as part of the kitchen area.

Two bedrooms each have been arranged in both the floors. The bath attached bedrooms have wardrobes for storage and separate dressing spaces too.

The owner had overseen the furnishing and finishing works of the house from abroad. The family is happy and proud that they could add a touch of their own to their dream dwelling.
