Cost-effective Palakkad house wins plaudits for classy, functional design

The elevation has been designed in the contemporary style that features an elegant blend of slope and flat roofs.

Hamsa who works in a school at Kongad in Palakkad had previously owned a house on the roadside. However, when pollution, dust and allergies became a menace, the family sold the house, hoping for a new beginning. Hamsa then purchased 11.5 cents plot in beautiful countryside, away from the buzz of the city.

The rectangular plot lies a few feet above the road level. Interestingly, the structure has been built without disrupting the natural layout of the plot. The elevation has been designed in the contemporary style that features an elegant blend of slope and flat roofs. The rustic charm of the exposed laterite stone finish is the highlight of the elevation.

The compound wall perfectly complements the structure by donning the exposed laterite stone design. The incredible design of the gate too is eye-catching. Designer cuttings have been pasted on GI sheet as a decorative element on the gate. Besides, the gold-coloured metal pipes too add a unique charm.

The car porch is built separately from the structure. Polycarbonate sheet has been paved on the metal sheet to build the compact car porch. Designed in 2550 sqft, this well-designed abode has a sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area, four bedrooms, upper living area and a balcony.

The interiors are open, making the spaces look and feel spacious. Moreover, it ensures excellent cross ventilation too.

The glass door beside the dining table opens to the charming vertical garden.

The design of the quaint breakfast counter made by paving Kalinga stone on metal frame is quite interesting. High chairs too have been arranged here to complete the look. The kitchen cabinets are done in aluminium fabrication and have glass shutters. Kalinga stone has been paved on the kitchen counter top too. Lots of top and lower cabinets have been arranged in the pantry kitchen to make it functional and efficient.

The stairway has metal frame and wooden planks as steps. This leads to a spacious upper living area. This beautifully furnished area with classy furniture sets has a hanging cot too.

Two bedrooms each have been arranged in both the floors. The bedrooms are simple yet classy. The bath attached bedrooms have in – built wardrobes for storage.

The construction of this amazing abode, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on an affordable budget of Rs 42 lakh. It indeed is an impressive feat, especially when the cost of the construction materials and labour charges are skyrocketing. Here, a modern house with all the amenities was built for Rs 1650 per square feet.

Among the various factors that helped in keeping a tab on the expenses, using locally sourced laterite stones for building the structure played a pivotal role. The walls in the front side aren’t plastered and feature a beautiful rustic style. Meanwhile, gypsum plastering has been used in the interiors. Old furniture has been remodelled to suit the theme of the new house. Only the entrance door is built in timber. Meanwhile, Ferro doors are used in the interiors. The door and window frames are done in a metal finish. Moreover, the kitchen has been furnished in aluminium fabrication.
