It was Akhilesh and Prajisha’s dream to build a modern mud house in their small plot in Trivandrum city. With chic designs and splendid features, this house surely stands out. Moreover, it does justice to the couple’s dream of building an eco-friendly house without hurting the environment.
The owner says that it was quite a challenge building a mud house in the 8 cents plot. Interestingly, the house is mostly constructed using the mud taken from the plot. The rest was purchased from outside.
The walls are built using a unique rammed earth method where a mud mixture is slammed into shutters. These eco-friendly walls help in retaining a cool ambience inside the house by pushing out the hot air. Besides, interlock compressed earth blocks too have been used.
The earthy tones of the walls grant a rustic charm to the house. Besides, white hue too has been used to add a beautiful contrast.
The ceiling is made using filler slab technology. The minimal use of timber helped in reducing the expenses. Meanwhile, alternative materials like UPVC windows, steel doors and MS grille have been used here.
Most of the furniture pieces are reused. The rest were purchased from outside.
Designed in 2400 sqft, the splendid abode has living and dining areas, a kitchen with a work area and two bedrooms on the ground floor. Meanwhile, there are two more bedrooms, family living area and a multi-utility space in the upper floor.
The living and dining areas are designed in an open theme. A TV unit has been used as a semi-partition here.
The house faces the west side. Meanwhile, the walls on the east side are lined with glass windows. The morning sunrays enter the house, in abundance, naturally lighting up the spaces.
Constructing the structure by retaining a well that never dries up was another challenge. However, through smart design, the well has been merged as part of the house.
The mud house draws instant attention for its spectacular features. The family says that the interiors have a pleasant atmosphere even during noon time. The house has excellent cross ventilation as the walls are lined with lots of windows.
Many tried to dissuade the couple from building a mud house as they were worried about the sturdiness and safety. However, they too are happy after they saw the beautiful house.
