Space constraints? This elegant Kozhikode house is a lesson

Kozhikode house
The elevation is designed in the flat box style to save space.

It was in 2008 that Biju Varghese who runs a business in his hometown of Calicut purchased a 4.5 cents plot and a small house in it. Ten years later, Biju decided to knock down the old house and build a modern abode there. The rectangular plot in the corner had posed multiple challenges to the designers. After leaving the legal setback, the house had to be constructed in just 2 cents. However, through smart designs, efficient planning and excellent execution, the team of talented designers were able to overcome all these challenges.

The elevation is designed in the flat box style to save space. Meanwhile, the folding gate ensures a spacious front yard where vehicles could be comfortably parked.

The sand texture, painted wall and glass window grant a chic look to the elevation. The open living area looks and feels roomy. One could easily catch a glimpse of the visitors at the gate from here. Meanwhile, the balcony is on the side and not directly above the sit-out.

The portable car porch is made by paving polycarbonate sheet on GI sheet. The family loves plants and greenery. Since they do not have enough space in the front yard to arrange an elaborate garden, they decorated the interiors with beautiful indoor plants, bringing hints of greenery into the house.

From the in – built sitting space to the shoe rack in the sit out, the presence of indoor plants could be seen.

The entrance door opens to the elegantly furnished formal living area. The TV unit is mounted on a wall here. Meanwhile, the prayer space is arranged on the curio shelf that also acts as a semi partition. The dining area and the staircase are part of the open and spacious hall. The dining table is set on the side so that the hall doesn’t look congested.

Interestingly, inverter storage space and the wash area are arranged beneath the stairway to make the interiors space efficient. Besides, there is a study area in the upper floor.

The modern kitchen is compact and has everything within the hand’s reach. The cupboards, meanwhile, are done in plywood and laminate with acrylic finish.

The bedrooms are simple yet elegant. Two bedrooms each have been arranged in both the floors. All the bedrooms are bath attached too.

There is a well that never dries up in the backside. The structure has been built by including this well too. After leaving 3 metres in the front, 2 metres in the back and 1.5 metres on both the sides, the house now sits on just 2.5 cents. However, those who enter this amazing abode are surprised at the open spaces that make the interiors feel spacious.
