This Onam was quite special for Perinthalmanna native Vijayakumaran and his family. The family was thrilled to move into their brand-new house in their hometown after living and working abroad for decades. The house exudes the elegant charm of the traditional architectural style.
The family wanted a cosy abode that reminds them of their old ancestral house while boasting of modern amenities and style. Noted architect Sandhya, who is based in Kozhikode, had designed this amazing abode. The house has been designed considering the modern lifestyle of the family members and the surrounding nature too. For instance, there is a high-rise apartment complex close to the house. One could easily catch a glimpse of this house from the upper floors. So, the interior spaces in the house have been designed by ensuring privacy.
Lots of public and open spaces have been included in the interiors make the house compatible with the relaxed life of the retired couple. Interestingly, the landscape has been smartly connected to the interior spaces.
The multi-layered roof paved with traditional mud roofing tiles grants a majestic charm to the elevation. Meanwhile, the long sit-out with pillars that boast of intricate carving works is one of the most beautiful spots in the house. GI truss roof has been installed in most part of roof with only some parts of the house having a concrete-proofed roof.
Designed in 3000 sqft, this amazing mansion looks like a mega single-storey house from the outside, even though it is a two-story building. Besides the car porch and the lavish sit-out, the house has formal and family living areas, a kitchen with a work area, dining space and two bedrooms in the ground floor. Meanwhile, the upper floor has two more bedrooms.
The walls are built using laterite stones. The unplastered wall in the front grants a rustic charm to this area. Boundary walls ensure that the landscape has privacy. A wicket gate in the shape of traditional padippura too has been built.
The spacious living-dining hall is the highlight of the interiors. A sliding glass door in the dining area opens to the landscape. Lots of fresh air and golden sunshine enter the house when this door is opened.
The grand elegance of exquisite teak wood furnishing adds a regal charm to the interiors. The furniture, doors and windows are all made in teakwood. Meanwhile, tiles in classy grey colour have been paved on the floor.
The modern kitchen is compact and has everything within the hand’s reach. The cabinets, meanwhile, are crafted in teakwood. An adjacent work area completes the kitchen.
The bedrooms are simple yet comfortable. The wardrobes here too are done in teakwood.
The family are proud that they got the house of their dreams that is easy to maintain while filling the interiors with positive vibes.
