The traditional architectural style of Kerala has still not lost its charm despite people preferring homes designed in the modern–contemporary style. The slanting sunshades and the mud-tiled roof of the traditional homes perfectly suit the unique weather of Kerala. Such homes that effectively bear the harsh summers and the southwestern monsoon, are known for its sustainability too.
Vazhoor native Suresh Kumar, his wife Shobana Kumari, and son Ashwin decided to pull down their old house and build a traditional-style house as they wanted to enjoy the incredible benefits of it.
The entrance of the house is on the east side as the road runs through the south side. Engineer Sreekant Pangapattu, who designed the house gave the structure a dual entrance area facing the south-east sides.
There are four spacious bedrooms that have attached bathrooms in this house. Meanwhile, the kitchen on the northeast side of the house has been designed in the open style. Besides, the house designed in 2700 sqft has a work area, store room and a utility staircase that leads to the terrace area.
The long veranda on the east side is an interesting highlight. Besides the formal living area, the family living area is arranged on the west side and the dining hall is on the north side. There is a side sit-out that is accessible from the dining area. The pergola roof in the centre of the hall pushes out hot air.
GI frame has been installed over a flat roof and is paved with roofing tiles. A balcony is added on the south side of the truss roof, making the house look like a double-story structure.
The inner courtyard in the family living area is decorated with beautiful indoor plants to bring in a hint of greenery.
The family’s friends and relatives are praising them for building such a fabulous abode that suits the weather and has all the modern amenities.
