Abdul Rasheed is thrilled that his unique house in the shape of a humongous termite mound, at Balussery in Kozhikode, has become the talk of the town. Even though the elevation looks like it has been ‘conquered’ by termites, the interiors of this smart home boast of modern amenities and amazing features. Interestingly, the elevation has been designed based on the concept of avoiding maintenance as much as possible. The harsh sunlight and the heavy downpours would only touch the facades and protect the house.

The owner says that the termite mound could be turned into an iceberg by painting it in white hue. The façade of the mound has been built using ferro cement after constructing the frame.

There is a sit-out, living and dining areas, show kitchen, main kitchen, work area and two bedrooms on the ground floor. Meanwhile, the upper floor has a home theatre, two more bedrooms and a balcony.

This is a beautiful house in which unique ideas and creative excellence merge with modern technology and amenities. The gate could be controlled using mobile phones from anywhere in the world. Similarly, the lights, fan and air conditioner too are fully automated.

The entrance door opens to a hall with a double-height ceiling which makes the interiors look incredibly vaster.

The TV unit that acts as a semi-partition between the living and dining areas could be rotated to any direction.

The dining table is designed like a metro city with miniatures of skyscrapers. The glass table top completes the unique look of the dining table. Meanwhile, the wash area has been arranged like a display shelf.

LED lights in multiple colours are the highlight of the hand railings of the staircase. Meanwhile, the fountain made using a long metal pipe is quite interesting.

A door in the upper floor opens to a balcony from where the termite mound could be closely seen. This design makes the house look like a fantasy park.

The bedrooms are designed in unique themes. The glass ceiling through which the sky could be enjoyed is the highlight of one of the bedrooms. Similarly, the bedrooms are full of surprises that excite curiosity.

Artificial grass has been paved in the front yard to make maintenance easier. Besides, there are tiny lighthouses in the landscape in the shape of termite mounds. These lights fabulously illuminate the house against the twilight sky.
