The design of Shabu and Simi’s house at Irinjalakuda in Thrissur district is a blend of western neo-colonial and tropical styles suitable for Kerala. The sloping tiled roof with trusses gives the house a local look.
While the building may seem single-storeyed from outdoors, it has two floors. Lush greenery all around, which acts as a natural shield against heat and dust, is yet another highlight. A detached car porch with truss roofing merges seamlessly with the main house.
The residents, with their experience of travelling widely across the world, have incorporated unique features of residences abroad in their dream home. A striking example is the compound wall, where the wall and gate are indistinguishable as they are both made of imported woven mesh screens.
Meanwhile, the furniture is customized and suits the interiors. The formal living could be detached from other areas inside the house by simply shutting the door. A glass corner window in this area provides sufficient light and outdoor views.
A single hall is set apart for family living and dining, and entry is available from both areas to the courtyard, where greenery pervades. Tropical plants which could be maintained easily such as calathea grow in the courtyard. Built as a metal frame with wooden planks, the staircase saves considerable space.
While designing the house, consideration was given to the elderly relatives of the owners as their bedroom opens to the courtyard, which is the meeting place of the residents. This not only helps the elderly people overcome loneliness but also provides a soothing feeling with all the greenery.
The main bedrooms have good natural lighting and cross ventilation. Wooden-finish tiles are laid on the floors of these rooms.
Along with the modern kitchen, which has WPC paint finish cabinets and a nano-white countertop, a work area is arranged. The countertop could be utilized as a breakfast counter also.
