Solving a design challenge: A house that combines contemporary and ‘fresh’

Currently, it is springtime for houses in contemporary style. However, there is also a problem of these becoming quickly repetitive. Contemporary architects are experimenting with new ideas to overcome these limitations. This house, built in such a style, is the dream home of the Ebin-Neethu couple in Koothuparamba, Kannur.

Designed screens are the highlight of the exterior view. The different screens were created using GI+CNC design cutting and paint finish. Along with these, there are large full-length windows and cement texture walls.

The courtyard is paved with natural stone. The lower level includes a porch, sit-out, formal living, dining, courtyard, kitchen, work area, one bedroom, and a bathroom. On the upper level, there is a home theatre, two bedrooms, bathrooms, a living area, and a balcony. The total area is 3,214 square feet.

Upon entering, the first space one encounters is made exceptionally attractive. The formal living area is designed with a double-height ceiling, creating an expansive and welcoming ambiance. A highlight here is the full-length glass window without grills, which allows abundant natural light to flood inside. The TV wall is artistically done up with textured paint, adding to the room’s charm.

The stairs were constructed using metal frames with wooden planks. The handrails are also finished in metal. Adjacent to the staircase is a double-height courtyard, which also features jali screens on its walls. This allows light to seep in and there is a resultant interplay of light and shade inside. A Buddha statue and indoor plants enhance the area’s positivity. The dining space is distinctively set apart with its wooden finish floor, contributing to the overall wooden theme. The false ceiling and lighting further complement this. A simple table with a marble top completes the elegant setup.

The upper living space is designed to complement the lower living area, effectively connecting the two levels through the double-height space. There is a home theatre setup with Dolby sound quality. The bedrooms are designed to offer a resort-like ambiance, featuring wooden false ceilings, warm-toned lights, wall panelling, and metal works that collectively create a cosy and inviting atmosphere.
