Nila, the tropical abode, situated at the tranquil countryside of Cherupuzha in Kannur, Kerala, is an architectural wonder that merges technical brilliance with artistic prowess. The house was carefully planned to merge with the 30-cent site that is at a height of nine metres. Interestingly, the structure has been designed by drawing inspiration from a mango tree that stands on the plot. The areas around the mango tree in the open yard are divided into multiple zones. This courtyard with the huge shade tree in the centre has now become the soul of the house.
The elevation features a harmonious combination of gable and flat roofs which creates a balance between traditional Vastu architecture and contemporary style. Meanwhile, the colour palette is incredibly pleasant with neutral shades of hues, earthy tones of terracotta and soft green.
The open terrace on the front façade facing the beautiful landscape acts as a vibrant outdoor living area where the family loves to hang out. The dining and the living areas too are designed similarly and are part of a zone.
Meanwhile, kitchen, dining area and living space are open and interconnected. The bedrooms are arranged as separate zones to ensure privacy even while ensuring the continuity of spaces. Besides, lots of openings ensure that the interiors are illuminated with natural sunshine.
The functional advantage of having more than one zone and the smart division of spaces ensures an aesthetic cohesion that is incredibly appealing to the eyes. There is a sit-out, formal living area and a guest bedroom on the ground floor. Meanwhile, the main family spaces are arranged on the first floor.
This zone could be accessed through a separate entrance from the higher spot on the site. This allows the family members to enjoy their privacy even while being connected to the rest of the house.
Open corridors strategically placed in shaded areas facilitate cross ventilation, keeping the interiors cool and fresh. These spaces can also be transformed into cozy nooks for relaxation.
